What is gingival hyperpigmentation?

The normal colour of the gums is coral pink or salmon pink. Darkening of gums, also known as gingival hyperpigmentation is due to excessive deposition of melanin, a brown pigment. This is not a sign of unhealthy gums and is normally seen in many individuals. However, this may lead to cosmetic concerns in some patients, especially patients with a gummy smile.

Causes:

It could be caused due to various factors like genetics, environmental factors, medications and certain diseases.
